August 3, 2026, Silver Sands of Morar

A beautiful, iconic and atmospheric beach with outstanding Western Isle views. Allegedly the last resting place of Alex Harvey's ashes (of that band fame) amongst other famous people. Best place to park a car is by the public toilets at Toigal on the road to the Back of Keppoch, from whence easy access to the foreshore.

A very nice beach just at the outskirts from Mallaig. Fine sand, clean water and a panoramic view.

Lovely beach just near the road.

The western end of Camusdarach beach has a couple of rocky headlands which cut off sections of the beach at high tide. It's not very hard to scramble over them to get back, or follow the paths inland over the dunes.

An awesome sandy beach with dunes, amazing views, rocky bits for shelter and for the kids to climb on and not many people.

Beautiful sandy beach with a belt of dunes, shallow entry into the water, less crowded than in Morar

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the hiking trails around Loch Morar suitable for dogs?

Yes, many trails in the Loch Morar area are great for hiking with dogs. The wide-open spaces and coastal paths offer plenty of room to explore. However, this is a rural area with active crofts and wildlife like red deer. It's essential to keep your dog under control, especially near livestock. Trails like the one to Camusdarach Beach are excellent options for a coastal walk with your canine companion.

What are some good circular or loop walks in the area?

The region offers several enjoyable circular routes, especially along the coast. A popular choice is the Silver Sands of Morar – Eigg, Rum, and Skye loop, which provides stunning views of the Inner Hebrides from the famous white sand beaches. For a longer day out, the Land, Sea & Islands Centre loop is a moderate 14.8 km hike that takes you through varied coastal scenery.

Are there any family-friendly hikes near Morar?

Definitely. The area around the Silver Sands of Morar is perfect for families. The terrain is relatively flat, and the white sandy beaches are ideal for a picnic and a paddle. The path from Glasnacardoch to Loch an Nostarie has also been upgraded to provide a firm surface, making it more accessible for pushchairs and little legs.

How do I get to the trailheads around Loch Morar?

Most trailheads are accessible by car from the A830 (the 'Road to the Isles'). Parking is available in Morar village and near popular spots like the Silver Sands, but it can be limited during peak season. For some unique routes, like the one from Bracorina to Tarbet, you can use the Western Isles Cruises ferry service from Mallaig to reach the remote trailhead at Tarbet on Loch Nevis and walk back.

What is the Bracorina to Tarbet walk like?

This is a fantastic one-way walk of about 9 km (5.5 miles) along an ancient path on the north shore of Loch Morar. It offers great mountain views and takes you over a low pass to the remote settlement of Tarbet on Loch Nevis. From Tarbet, you can catch a ferry back to Mallaig. It's a true taste of the wild Highlands.

Are there any challenging hikes or mountains to climb?

While the immediate hills around Loch Morar are not Munros, they still offer rewarding climbs with spectacular views. For experienced hikers, ascending peaks like Sgurr na Ciche provides panoramic vistas stretching from Ben Nevis to the Hebrides. The area has 3 designated difficult routes for those seeking a tougher challenge.

How do the hikes here compare to Loch Ness?

Hiking around Loch Morar offers a different experience. While both are deep, dramatic lochs, Morar is known for its tranquility, pristine white sand beaches, and stunning coastal views towards the isles of Eigg and Rùm. The trails here often feel more remote and wild, focusing on the unique interplay between the freshwater loch and the nearby sea.

What do other hikers say about the trails at Loch Morar?

The trails around Loch Morar are highly regarded by the komoot community, with over 1,500 hikers exploring the area. Reviewers frequently praise the spectacular coastal scenery, the beauty of the 'Silver Sands', and the sense of tranquility on the more remote paths.

Is wild camping permitted around Loch Morar?

Yes, wild camping is generally permitted in Scotland under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. The area around Loch Morar offers many beautiful and remote spots. Campers should follow the 'leave no trace' principles: camp away from roads and buildings, be respectful of wildlife, and take all litter with you.

Where can I find a pub or cafe after a hike?

After exploring the trails, you can find pubs and cafes in the nearby villages of Morar and Mallaig. These offer a welcome place to relax and enjoy some local hospitality. Mallaig, being a larger fishing port, has a wider selection of establishments to choose from.

How many hiking trails are available around Loch Morar?
