Hikes around Chelveston Cum Caldecott explore a landscape shaped by both agricultural and military history. The area is characterized by a high plateau, the site of the former RAF Chelveston, which provides a terrain of open grassland and old concrete tracks. This contrasts with the surrounding gentle, rolling farmland typical of Northamptonshire, with trails connecting to nearby villages and nature reserves like Stanwick Lakes.

Lovely, easy gravel paths. Can get busy at weekends with walkers etc, so can be a bit slow going. But early morning, weekdays etc usually all pretty good.

Yes, the walks around Chelveston are generally dog-friendly. The wide-open spaces of the former airfield are great for dogs to explore. However, you will be crossing farmland, so always keep your dog under control, especially near livestock, and follow any local signage.
The area is well-known for its circular walks. Many trails are designed as loops, starting and finishing in the same place. These routes often take you across the former RAF Chelveston plateau and connect to the nine surrounding villages, offering varied scenery without the need to retrace your steps.
The landscape is one of contrasts. You'll find expansive, open terrain on the high plateau of the old airfield, which offers what locals call "big sky views." This is surrounded by the classic rolling farmland of Northamptonshire, with paths often providing distant views of church spires like the one at Higham Ferrers.
Many of the trails connect to historic villages that have traditional pubs. For example, some routes start or pass through Chelveston village, which is home to the Star & Garter pub, a popular spot for walkers to get refreshments after their hike.
Yes, the area is rich in history. Many footpaths cross the former RAF Chelveston airfield, where you can still see remnants of its military past. The trails also connect to several ancient villages, each with its own historic church, offering a glimpse into the region's long heritage.
For a detailed overview of the main circular routes around the plateau, the local parish council provides a helpful leaflet. You can download the Chelveston Plateau Walks leaflet to see the network of paths connecting the local villages.
Parking is generally available in the villages where the walks begin. For routes starting in Chelveston, you can typically find on-street parking near the village center. If you are visiting Stanwick Lakes, there is a dedicated car park at the visitor center, though a fee may apply.
While most trails are easy to moderate, there are options for longer hikes. You can combine several of the circular routes to create a more challenging day out. For a longer moderate walk with minimal elevation, consider the Higham Ferrers Lock – Barn Owl Sighting loop from Higham Ferrers, which covers over 9 km.
Hiking is enjoyable here year-round. In spring, the churchyard in Chelveston is known for a beautiful display of snowdrops. Summer offers long days to enjoy the "big sky views" from the airfield plateau, while autumn brings rich colors to the surrounding farmland.
