Incredibly well preserved 11th century defensive castle in the mountains above Tui and the Miño valley.

The constant flow of the Tea River southwards into the Miño River creates these natural pools on the banks of the river for everyone to enjoy. Jump in to cool off on a summer day.

The Mount of A Picaraña rises to 387 m above sea level, a few kilometers from Ponteareas and very close to the Franciscan monastery of Canedo. Its summit has been a place of devotion since ancient times and large pilgrimages are held in the recreational area located between the two highest peaks.

The Condado region, is full of Roman buildings, bridges and ruins. The Roman villa found in the parish of Angoares, a short distance from Ponteareas was an active township in its day and has a great deal of historic ruins. It is thought that a Roman road passed through here, perhaps the XIX, on connecting Bracara Augusta (Braga in Portugal) with Asturica Augusta (Astorga).

Dating back to the late 11th century, teh castle has a long, rich history. In 1117, when Queen Urraca was surrounded in this castle by supporters of her son, the boy-king Alfonso VII, she managed to escape to Santiago de Compostela in search of the aid of Archbishop Gelmírez. Legend has it that she fled through the underground passageway that connected the castle to the banks of the Tea. The castle tour can be done in an an hour or so. Check hours, they do siesta here...
