It was in this village and that of Mérignies that the famous battle of Mons-en-Pévèle took place, on August 18, 1304, between the French army. Today the battles take place on the bike every April as the Paris Roubaix route passes through the village and its paved sector.

During the battle, the people of Bruges made a promise to Our Lady of the Pottery (a Bruges abbey) to carry a 36-pound candle to her in procession each year if they returned home safe and sound. Since 1304, this promise has been kept in Bruges, and a candle is carried in procession from the Chapel of Our Lady of the Blind to Our Lady of the Pottery. In 1992, the people of Bruges, who had initiated ties with the village in 1987, presented the parish and municipality of Mons-en-Pévèle with a replica of this statue. Every September, a fraternal ceremony is held in front of this statue, attended by the people of Bruges, who are welcomed by the municipality and the parish. Source: Mons-en-Pévèle Town Hall
