Tips from the Community

Jockel
July 15, 2026, Courant de Contis

The Courant de Contis on Wikipedia is an approximately 31-kilometer-long coastal river in the southwestern French department of Landes in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It belongs to the characteristic "Courants Landais", a group of small, often natural watercourses that serve as natural outlets for the extensive system of lakes and wetlands behind the dunes. Its source originates in the municipality of Lesperon at an altitude of about 86 meters. From there, it flows westward through the dense pine forests of the Landes de Gascogne cultural landscape, receiving several tributaries along the way, such as the Ruisseau de Mézos. In its coastal lower reaches, the river breaks through the massive dune system and finally flows directly into the Atlantic Ocean near the well-known seaside resort of Contis-Plage (municipality of Saint-Julien-en-Born). Typical for this last section of the river is the noticeable influence of the tides, which regularly push the water upstream. The lush, almost jungle-like bank vegetation, often referred to as gallery forest, makes the watercourse an ecologically valuable habitat and a popular area for nature observation as well as gentle tourism such as canoe and kayak tours.

The bronze statue depicts a traditional woman from the Landes (une Landaise). She leans against a striking base made of the regional pink sandstone from Bidarray (pierre rose de Bidarray). Soldier graves are symbolically carved into the stone. The sculptor: The monument was created in the years 1923–1924 by the famous French sculptor and ceramicist Édouard Cazaux (1889–1974), who was himself from the region and is one of the most important representatives of the Art Deco style in Southwest France. Meaning: It commemorates the soldiers from the municipality who fell in the First World War (and later conflicts). Instead of a typical, heroic soldier, it shows the grief and attachment to the homeland of the local population through the female figure.
