Above Reichenberg lies the castle of the same name. Although it is relatively unknown beyond the region due to its location in the Hasenbach valley, Reichenberg Castle is one of the most significant and unusual castle complexes in the whole of Rhineland-Palatinate. It boasts considerable structural substance; many aspects of late medieval castle construction can be observed on this monument from the early 14th century. Above all, the dominant, Mannerist shield wall with its formerly unusually high flanking towers – the northern one collapsed only about 40 years ago – represents a peculiarity in late medieval castle building. Preserved to this day, the hall building with its ceiling resting on cube capitals testifies to the high degree of representation of the complex. Thus, the builders, Count Wilhelm I of Katzenelnbogen and his son Wilhelm II, created an architectural highlight with the venerable shield wall castle. The castle is privately owned and currently only accessible from the outside. https://www.welterbe-mittelrheintal.de/a-burg-reichenberg
