Saint-Jorioz is a French commune located in Haute-Savoie, on the west bank of Lake Annecy. In brief Natural setting: Between lake and mountains (Bauges massif), offering exceptional landscapes. Tourism & Leisure: Highly popular for its large sandy beach, its marina, its cycle paths (greenway) and its hiking trails. Label: Recognized for the quality of its waters and its environment, notably through the Blue Flag. It is a dynamic residential and tourist town, ideally located just 9 km from Annecy.

This is the Château de Châteauvieux, more commonly known as the Château de Duingt or Château Ruphy. Ideally located on a rocky peninsula jutting out into Lake Annecy (in Haute-Savoie), it symbolically separates the "Grand Lac" from the "Petit Lac", directly opposite the Roc de Chère. 📜 Its History ⚔️ From medieval origins (11th - 16th century) A strategic location: Originally, the castle was built around the 11th or 12th century on what was then a real island. Its position was crucial: it allowed control of navigation on the lake as well as the ancient Roman road (the Geneva - Italy axis) which passed along the west bank. The Duin family: For centuries, it was the property of the family of the lords of Duin (vassals of the counts of Geneva). At that time, it was a purely defensive fortress. 🌹 From fortress to exceptional residence (17th - 18th century) The transformation by the Sales: In 1698, Marquis François de Sales acquired the building. The de Sales family would gradually transform this austere medieval fortress into a refined pleasure residence, typical of the Age of Enlightenment. It was at this time that the buildings were unified, a stone bridge was built to connect the island to the mainland (creating the current peninsula), and richly decorated lounges (including a Chinese lounge and a waterside music lounge) were fitted out. Revolutionary period: During the French Revolution, the castle served as a secret hiding place to protect the relics and remains of Saint François de Sales and Sainte Jeanne de Chantal, before being sold as national property. 🏰 The modern imprint (19th century to today) Baron Ruphy: In 1839, Baron Scipion Ruphy bought the estate. He undertook major works that gave it its current appearance: he had Mansart-style slate roofs laid and added neo-Gothic crenellations to the top of the large round tower that you can see very well in your photo. The de Certeau family: Through marriage, the castle then passed into the hands of the de La Barge de Certeau family, who still own it today and have been ensuring its preservation for nearly 200 years. 🎨 The castle and the arts This landscape is one of the most famous and photographed on Lake Annecy. It deeply inspired painters, notably Paul Cézanne, who immortalized it in 1896 in his famous painting "Le Lac bleu". 📌 Practical information The castle is private property. It cannot be freely visited inside all year round, but its gardens and courtyard occasionally open to the public during cultural events or festivals in the summer period.
