The city's development was primarily shaped by fishing, seafaring, and oyster farming. As early as the Middle Ages, oysters from Cancale were known beyond the region and later became an important economic sector. The port of La Houle developed into the center of maritime life. Today, Cancale, with its coastal landscape, port facilities, and vibrant oyster tradition, recalls its long history as a fishing and port town.

The memorial at the Pointe des Crolles is one of the most important monuments in the Breton port town. It was erected in 1930 to commemorate the men and women of Cancale who lost their lives in the two World Wars. It was created by the sculptor Louis-Henri Nicot, the architect A. Bolloré, and the stonemason Jules Hignard. The monument is made of granite and kersantite, a dark, durable stone from Brittany, and depicts a winged Victory figure flanked by a soldier and a sailor – symbols of Cancale's close connection to land and sea. The inscription on the front of the memorial reads: "Cancale à ses enfants morts pour la France – 1914-1918, 1939-1945, T.O.E." (“Cancale to his children who fell for France – 1914-1918, 1939-1945, Overseas Territories”).

Fishermen and oyster farmers once lived here, their houses nestled in terraces on the hillside. The narrow streets, stone staircases, and colorful facades give the town an authentic, maritime charm. Today, La Houle is a lively neighborhood with restaurants, oyster stands, and small shops—a place where history meets the present. From the promenade, there are magnificent views of the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel.
