The Jewish communities in Europe, whose centuries-old tradition is often only documented by commemorative plaques or monuments, were honored - especially in these difficult times with a rapidly growing, openly expressed anti-Semitism - by awarding the "International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen" to the President of the Conference of European Rabbis, Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, and the Jewish communities in Europe. "In recognition of his outstanding work for peace, the self-determination of peoples and European values, for tolerance, pluralism and understanding, and in recognition of his significant commitment to interreligious and intercultural dialogue, the Board of Directors of the Society for the Award of the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen in 2024 honors the President of the Conference of European Rabbis, Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, and together with him the Jewish communities in Europe. With this award, the Charlemagne Prize Board wants to send a signal that Jewish life is a natural part of Europe and that there must be no place for anti-Semitism in Europe. Jewish life is an important part of European history and the present - now and in the future. (...) Together with the President of the Conference of European Rabbis, Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, and the Jewish communities in Europe, the Board of Directors of the Society for the Award of the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen in 2024 is honoring the outstanding representative of European Jewry and Jewish life in Europe, which has enriched our continent for centuries and will and must always have its place here."

Arcachon, we spent 3 days there, 3 very pleasant days. Out of season, the city is no longer the same: the grandparents are relieved of their grandchildren who they will find again the first weekend of the school year, we find ourselves in this in-between, a city that is running at a slow pace but has not yet locked itself in its winter shell. The main part of the day is the walk along the beach, a coffee on the terrace of the Repetto brasserie, some shopping at the covered market of Arcachon, an aperitif at the Petit Louvre, the meal, my nap and we do it again by browsing the different shops of the small shopping streets; at the end of the walk, a few oysters at the Pitt to whet our appetites... A desire for a longer walk? We get lost in the streets of the Quartier d'Hiver behind the Mauresque park to admire the typical seaside architecture of the French coast; or we push towards the jetty of the chapel passing by the Notre-Dame-d'Arcachon basilica...

Great slope, but it has a few bumps because the roots grow through the bottom.

Bicycle highway with some bumps due to the roots growing under the surface. Still a very nice route!

Beautiful seaside resort with several cycle paths along the coast. Known for its oysters and the lake of the same name connected to the sea. Nearby is the Dune de Pila.

Exceptional view but……wooden track in poor condition, promiscuity with pedestrians sometimes tricky and above all it ends on Place Peyneau without indication in the middle of a car park. What follows is an ordeal in front of the waterfront restaurants…. I have lived in Arcachon for 45 years!

Arcachon is a very beautiful seaside resort which has seven kilometers of beaches. Located on the banks of the famous basin of the same name, this dynamic city has an atypical architecture nestled in a remarkable natural setting.

This beautiful 600-meter beach is located between the port of Arcachon and the Eyrac jetty. It offers a lovely place to relax on the edge of the Arcachon basin.

The Site Naturel des Quinconces, a preserved area between Andernos and Ares, is ideal for hiking through marshes and forests, offering magnificent views of the Bassin from Pointe des Quinconces. The town is also traversed by rivers like the Bétey, Cirès, and Massurat, which contribute to the local flora and fauna.

Yes, Andernos-Les-Bains offers several beaches for relaxation and water activities. Popular choices include Mauret beach, Bétey beach, and Jetée beach. It's good to note that Arcachon Bay experiences significant tide changes, which can affect the water's proximity to the shore. The area is also popular for water sports like sailboarding, stand-up paddleboarding, and boat trips.
The spring and autumn months generally offer pleasant weather for outdoor activities, with milder temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer is also popular, especially for beach activities and water sports, but can be busier. The Coastal Trail - L'Eyre du Teich can be muddy and icy in winter, so spring through autumn is ideal for trails.
For breathtaking panoramic views of the Arcachon Bay, including Cap Ferret lighthouse and sometimes even the Dune du Pilat, head to the Andernos Pier (Jetée Louis David). It's one of the longest piers in France and particularly popular for sunset strolls. The Pointe des Quinconces within the Site Naturel des Quinconces also offers magnificent views of the Bassin.
While many outdoor areas are dog-friendly, specific regulations apply to beaches and nature reserves. It's advisable to check local signage or the official Andernos-Les-Bains tourism website for the most current information regarding dog access to beaches and protected natural sites like the Saint-Brice les Quinconces le Coulin Nature Reserve.
Andernos-Les-Bains is known for its charming 19th-century villas, often referred to as "Andernosiennes," which showcase typical Arcachonese architecture. You can explore this architectural heritage through guided tours offered by the tourist office.
The well-maintained bike trail providing access to Eyrac Beach, Arcachon, partially on wooden boardwalks, is designed to separate bikers and pedestrians, making it potentially suitable for strollers. For specific wheelchair-accessible paths, it's recommended to consult local tourist information for detailed routes and conditions.
