August 5, 2026, Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, ancienne chapelle du château

Much more than a simple village church, Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption was originally the chapel of the seigniorial castle of Villespassans. Built between the 12th and 16th centuries, it has the particularity of housing two superimposed naves, testifying to the different phases of its evolution. Its massive square tower, built of dressed stone, still dominates the heart of the old medieval village, where remains of the ramparts also still exist. Villespassans developed on a ridge of Hettangian dolomites, limestone rocks about 200 million years old that mark the early Jurassic period. These extensive terrains offer a solid base on which the village was established and partly explain its dominant position in the landscape. Nicknamed the "village of a thousand and one stones", Villespassans is also renowned for its remarkable dry stone heritage: *capitelles*, low walls, dolmens, and old agricultural constructions dot the surroundings.

As you cross Agel, take the time to stop in front of the Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul church. Behind its peaceful appearance lies a turbulent history: destroyed in the 14th century, rebuilt, and then ravaged again during the Wars of Religion, it has crossed the centuries before adopting its current appearance in the 16th and 17th centuries. Did you know? Its large bell from 1781 still invokes protection against storms in a Latin inscription, while a small sculpted lizard hides among its ornaments.

November 1, 2025, Canal de Jonction

The section posted for this Highlight is in the town of Sallèles-d'Aude so you have a lot of people walking in this section. Dog walkers with dogs not on leads, families taking the whole path etc., so whilst it is pretty in can be annoying when biking, This was in the last days of Oct. '25 so I think in summer it would be almost impassable at times. The other way towards the Gailhousty Lock and eventually Narbonne is much quieter if you want to ride unhindered by walkers & dogs, especially if you take the wide gravel track on the other side of the canal from the Vioe Verte.

On the way to Assignan, a beautiful road to a lovely village. I wouldn't miss a cup of coffee here.

This climb is very uneven. After noon, you'll be riding in the shade.
