One of my favorite cycle paths in the area. It's just fun to whizz along the canal with a mountain bike. The path goes up and down in parts and has some potholes. It's also quite dusty in the summer. If that doesn't bother you, you're in the right place 😁

Attached to the diocese of Agde, the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Thibéry is said to have been founded around 770 with the arrival of Attilio, a disciple and advisor of Benoît d’Aniane. First abbot of the monastery, Attilio settled with a few monks near the tombs of the three Christian martyrs Tibère, Modeste, and Florence, executed during the reign of the Roman emperor Diocletian on November 10, 304 [...]. During the Middle Ages, the abbey was the seat of several councils, such as those of 907 and 1050, bringing together bishops and abbots from the province of Narbonne. All-powerful among the abbeys of Languedoc, Saint-Thibéry declined with the Hundred Years' War.

This Benedictine abbey has its roots in the 8th century. Around 770, a monastery is said to have been founded here by Attilio, a disciple of Benedict of Aniane, near the tombs attributed to three Christian martyrs: Thibéry, Modeste, and Florence. The place then became an important pilgrimage center. The abbey occupies an even older site: it is located at the foot of the ancient oppidum and on the presumed site of the ancient agglomeration of Cessero. The current abbey church, largely marked by Gothic architecture, bears witness to the many transformations of the abbey during the Middle Ages and the following centuries. In 1639, the abbey joined the Congregation of Saint Maur and received the title of royal abbey from Louis XIII. The Maurists then undertook a major reorganization of the monastery, of which the conventual buildings still retain elements.

In the heart of old Creissan, a heritage site unfolds, telling more than a thousand years of history. The Saint-Martin church, mentioned as early as the 10th century, belonged to the powerful chapter of the Saint-Just cathedral in Narbonne, which held lordship over the village for several centuries. It was solemnly consecrated in 1132, during a religious assembly bringing together several bishops, an exceptional event that testifies to the village's importance in the Middle Ages. This modest Romanesque church retains the characteristics of 12th-century Languedoc religious architecture: a single nave covered by a barrel vault and a semi-dome apse. More unusually, the remains of an old well are visible within the building. A short walk away, the castle of Creissan recalls the other facet of medieval power: that of the lords who administered the territory alongside the religious authorities. Together, the Saint-Martin church and the old castle form the historic heart of the village.

It is difficult to imagine that the heart of the village was here nearly a thousand years ago. From the 11th century onwards, the Castellas formed the nucleus of the Abeilhan castrum, around which the fortified village developed. The church of Notre-Dame-de-Pitié is part of this history: it gradually replaced the old parish church of Saint-Pierre, located outside the ramparts, as the inhabitants grouped together under the protection of the fortifications. The latter still exists: transformed into a chapel, it can be discovered about 700 meters north-east of the old centre, amidst the vineyards. The Castellas has, however, almost entirely disappeared. At the end of the 19th century, its last vestiges were demolished to make way for the impressive construction you see today... a drinking water reservoir. Few visitors imagine that this imposing building actually hides a hydraulic infrastructure. In 1923, the war memorial was added to it in an elegant architectural composition with a double staircase, giving the ensemble its current appearance. A final curiosity: despite its name, Abeilhan has no connection with bees. The toponym most likely derives from the Gallo-Roman estate of a landowner named Apilius (Apilianum), recalling that this promontory was already occupied several centuries before the birth of the medieval village.

In the heart of Lieuran-lès-Béziers, the Saint-Martin church bears witness to nearly nine centuries of history. Mentioned as early as 1145, it still preserves several elements from its Romanesque origins of the 12th century today, notably its apse, its choir bay, and its bell tower. The building also tells the story of the village's transformations over time. In the 19th century, after the collapse of the old nave, a new part was rebuilt in the neo-Romanesque style, giving birth to this church where medieval heritage and more recent architecture coexist. Its most precious heritage is hidden in its bell tower: two bells from the 12th century, classified as Historical Monuments, have crossed the centuries. They have accompanied the daily lives of the inhabitants for nearly nine hundred years, marking the hours, religious festivals, and the community's great moments.

Built at the end of the 12th century and integrated into the ramparts of Gabian, the church of Saint-Julien-et-Sainte-Basilisse forms the historic heart of the village. It still retains its original Romanesque nave and apse, while the side chapels and bell tower, added in the 15th century, bear witness to its evolution over time. The site is however much older: Gabian owes its name to a Gallo-Roman estate belonging to Gavius. The Romans diverted the spring of La Resclauze to supply Béziers via an aqueduct nearly twenty kilometers long, proof of the site's importance since Antiquity. This spring is also the origin of an exceptional geological curiosity: the presence of natural petroleum, exploited since Roman times for medicinal purposes and for caulking, and then from 1924 by the Société des Pétroles de Gabian. Industrial activity ceased when the small deposit could no longer compete with the large oil fields discovered in the mid-20th century.

The castle and the church have formed the historic heart of Pouzolles since the Middle Ages. The castle is attested as early as the 12th century as the possession of the lords of Pouzolles, before passing into the hands of several noble families over the centuries. Alongside it, a castle chapel was built in the 15th century to serve the castle and its inhabitants. In 1556, a plague epidemic forced the inhabitants of the neighboring hamlet of Saint-Martin de Grézan to take refuge around the fortress. The chapel then became the parish church, and the village developed under the shelter of the fortifications.
