Just a few minutes from the famous Pont du Gard lies the prehistoric rock shelter of Salpêtrière – a real insider tip for history and nature lovers. People lived here thousands of years ago, using the natural rock overhang as shelter. Archaeological finds attest to settlement from the Paleolithic to the Neolithic period. The path there is short and leads through a quiet, Mediterranean landscape. Those who visit the Pont du Gard can wonderfully combine the rock shelter with a hike and get an impression of how our ancestors lived in this historically rich place.

The most beautiful view of the Pont du Gard opens up from the opposite river bank. From there you can admire the impressive Roman aqueduct in its full glory and take great photos – especially in the morning or at sunset, when the warm light makes the stone glow golden. Those who have a little time should take a short walk along the Gardon and enjoy the view in peace.

Purchased by the City of Nîmes in 2018, redeveloped and opened to the public since 2021, the Terres de Rouvières natural space is located north of the city in the Russan district and covers 54 hectares. Three marked routes allow for hiking or mountain biking on 2.5 km of trails in the eastern part, in the heart of nature. On the west side, there is a 1.5 km fitness trail with wooden equipment. Two parking areas have been created to welcome visitors, one on the Chemin des Terres de Rouvière and another on the Chemin du Mas de Roulan. Near these areas, there are children's play areas, two water points, and picnic tables.
