Apart from walking around it once, there is nothing more you can do at this heavily decayed ruin. It would also be far too complex and expensive to invest anything here anymore.

The castle is being gradually restored by the support association with professional stonemasons. There is a room with a wood-burning stove and plexiglass panes that can be heated for the helpers. A barbecue area has also been set up in the former castle moat with a covered hut for the restorers.

Between the ruins of the castles Alt- and Neu-Windstein lie the remains of the former castle Mittel-Windstein. Of it, a rectangularly hollowed-out rock, meager remains of walls, steps, and a moat can still be found. This castle was probably built around the same time as the other two Windstein castles, i.e., in the 13th century. It is equally likely that this castle was also razed at the end of the 17th century by King Louis XIV.

It's incredible that the gable walls and columns from the 16th century are still standing today.

You can climb to the lower rock of the castle. A fantastic view. Also impressive is the deep well.

A somewhat larger bunker by the roadside. The gun turret is impressive, with bullet holes still clearly visible. This bunker, too, can be entered.

A small, one-room bunker that was probably used to monitor the road junction.
