Very beautiful peak! Magnificent view of the Aneto massif! I recommend it!

I would like to make hikers aware that this route can become particularly dangerous in winter, particularly because of the ridge towards the Pas de l'Ane which can become covered in ice. In this case, ice axes and mountaineering crampons are essential. 2 people died at this location on 1/1/2025, which triggered access bans. I have taken steps to have these bans lifted while raising awareness in a constructive way. Take the time to find out about the snow conditions before undertaking this hike. Enjoy your walks!

This is essentially a 14km clockwise loop. The ascent to the peaks is pretty well marked out although I’d always suggest downloading an offline route map. It’s not particularly technical just some simple clambering over a few steep rocky sections before the 1st col (Teyech). I wouldn’t fancy that rocky section if it’s frozen mind you. After the 2 stunning peaks the rest of the loop is a few kms along the ridge before turning down back through the forest. If it’s snowy, you’ll very easily lose the path (i did a lot) so another good reason to download the route.

Beautiful pass of the Tour de France offering a very beautiful point of view at its summit. It can be accessed by gravel or mountain bike in two different ways and also left in two different ways without going through the tarmac ...

One of the mythical Pyrenean ports of the Tour de France, known largely for the tragic fall of Luis Ocaña in the 1971 Tour when he was leading the general classification. Its 2 aspects have a lot of crumbs: - west slope that starts from Saint Béat: it is the hardest. It is 9.7 km with an average slope of 8.7%. It is a very constant climb, with a small break when passing through Boux. The first part is a little harder and uglier since you barely have any views and you go up through the middle of a valley. The final part is spectacular with its many horseshoe curves, good panoramic views and the monument to the place where Luis Ocaña fell. - east slope: it is longer, with an initial section of 7 km very winding with a slope of 4%. It also has a break in its intermediate zone. Once the hard part starts, it is also very constant, like the west slope, although the average slope is 7-8%. This aspect has even more twists than the previous one. For more information, consult the profile published by cylcingcols.com -- > http://www.cyclingcols.com/col/Mente

Two prominent mountain passes are the Portet-d'Aspet pass, which culminates at 1,069 meters between the Ger and Bouigane valleys, and Menté Pass, connecting the Garonne valley to that of the Ger at 1,349 meters. Both offer significant challenges and scenic routes.
Absolutely. Gar Peak is highly recommended for its stunning sunrises and sunsets. Another significant summit is Pic de Cagire, which offers rewarding views after a demanding ascent.
The area around Milhas is ideal for various outdoor activities. You can find numerous trails for running, hiking, and mountain biking. For detailed routes, explore the Running Trails around Milhas, Hiking around Milhas, and MTB Trails around Milhas guides.
While many trails are challenging, you can find some easier options. For instance, the Chucaou Tower Discovery Trail is rated as easy. For more moderate hikes, consider 'The Pic de Paloumere - hike starting from the Col de Portet d'Aspet' or 'Sengouagnet Church – Foret de Bambous loop from Sengouagnet'. You can find these and more in the Hiking around Milhas guide.
The mountain passes around Milhas are generally considered challenging. For example, the ascent of Menté Pass from Saint-Béat is 9.3 kilometers long with an average gradient of 9.13%, including sections over 11%. The Portet-d'Aspet pass also features steep ramps, particularly in its final kilometers.
Hiking to Gar Peak involves rocky and grassy sections, requiring good fitness, balance, and appropriate footwear. It's advisable to download an offline route map, especially as some sections can be challenging if frozen or covered in snow. The effort is well worth the panoramic views.
For hiking and cycling, spring through autumn generally offers the best conditions. However, be aware that some high-altitude routes, like those near Pic de Cagire or Gar Peak, can become particularly dangerous in winter due to ice and snow, potentially requiring specialized equipment like ice axes and mountaineering crampons.
Yes, the Col des Ares, culminating at 797 meters above sea level, offers a lovely panorama over the Garonne valley. It's a nice, smaller pass that provides beautiful views without the extreme challenge of the higher peaks.
Visitors frequently praise the challenging yet rewarding nature of the mountain passes and summits. The panoramic views from peaks like Gar Peak are often highlighted as a major draw, making the demanding ascents worthwhile. The diverse landscape also provides a great variety for outdoor enthusiasts.
