Built by John Lackland, Duke of Normandy (1199-1204), Duke of Aquitaine (1199-1216) and King of England from 1199 to 1216, the castle was built on a rock occupied since antiquity. Witness to the Hundred Years' War, the castle of Rauzan was taken twice by the French, including by Bertrand Du Guesclin in 1377. Classified as a historic monument in 1862, it was only revived in people's minds from the 1970s onwards when the municipality of Rauzan, owner since 1900, and some enthusiasts of medieval architecture undertook clearing and restoration work. Quite small town. Great summer fete in beginning of August. The restaurant on the main place doesn’t look to spectacular but the food and service is really good. Very friendly people everywhere.

I find St Emilion to be very pretentious and focused on fleecing tourists. For a more authentic French town, visit Castillon.
