On September 23, 1910, the Peruvian Geo Chavez was the first to fly over the Alps by airplane from Ried-Brig to Domodossola. Shortly before landing in Domodossola, both wings of the Blériot folded upwards, and man and machine crashed to the ground from a height of almost twenty meters. Geo Chavez died on September 28, 1910. The fountain with Icarus on Sebastiansplatz has commemorated this daring flight since 1920. Even today, the largest airport in Peru bears the name of its proud aviator Geo Chavez. Source: https://www.brig-simplon.ch/poi/chavez-brunnen

It was built in the years 1636/37 by the master builder N. Bodmer from Prismell, under strong influence from Italian models. Inside, there is an altarpiece painted by Lorenz Justin Ritz in 1837, depicting St. Sebastian and a view of the town of Brig. On the facade facing east and the Sebastiansplatz, the Baroque statues of St. Leodegar and St. Jerome stand in niches. The Sebastianskapelle in Brig is owned by the Burgerschaft Brig-Glis, which also takes care of its maintenance. St. Sebastian is honored annually on his name day (January 20th) with a solemn sung mass, and the Burgerschaft traditionally invites the clergy, the choir, and all mass attendees for a broth, food, and drink.
