In the Middle Ages and early modern times, there were few monasteries that were directly subordinate to the Pope. The Harsefeld monastery belonged to them. In the course of the post-monastery period, however, a large part of the monastery complex fell into disrepair.

The Harsefeld Monastery or Rosenfeld Monastery was an exempt Benedictine archabbey in the market town of Harsefeld in the district of Stade, Lower Saxony. It existed from 1104 to 1648, until the end of the Thirty Years' War. After the Reformation, the monastery was one of the last bastions of Catholicism on the Lower Elbe. A visit is both recommendable and interesting.
