The legendary site of one of the most famous legends of the Ardennes. The site of Dames de Meuse has inspired many artists with its magnificent landscapes. George Sand, Théophile Gauthier and Michelet were all impressed in their descriptions by the dark forest that covers most of the site. According to legend, this place is the grandiose testimony to the punished adultery of the Dames de Meuse.

“Carrière Prosper” is the name of the place that now houses around twenty climbing routes ranging from level 4C to 7A (more for experienced climbers). Adapting the quarry took around five hundred hours of work. “We have to remove the unstable stones, carefully inspect the quality of the rock and possibly fix it, and only at the end do we start drilling holes to install what we call ‘the pins’, i.e. the belay points,” explains Koen Hauchecorne, head of rocks at the Flemish Climbing Federation (this federation manages this site and a dozen others, and it’s more or less the same for its French-speaking counterpart).

Castle of the Counts of Hamal in Vierves-sur-Viroin Based on a fortress and a farm of medieval origin, the emblematic building spreads its slender silhouette over the landscape of Vierves-sur-Viroin - private property. The 'Comtes de Hamal', who owned the estate between 1567 and 1852, extensively renovated the old medieval fortress and farm and reduced the defensive functions of the building to a base. The facade of the house, in classical style, is pierced with large windows. This “modern” home is flanked by the so-called Attila Tower, whose spherical roof pushes the castle into the landscape, while its large windows provide new vantage points. In the second half of the 19th century, works related to the pleasure continued: the two courtyards were joined to form a large terrace opening onto the valley. The garden is below, the tree-lined ring that splits the ramparts...

The Carrière Prospèr is a former quarry in the Couvin region, far from the more famous climbing areas on the Meuse, Lesse and Ourthe. Still, it is worth climbing here, also because you can ideally combine this area with the Rocher de la Maiselle, only 500 meters away. About twenty routes have recently been established in the quarry and some of them are among the most beautiful crevasse routes in the country. If you park the car just west of Olloy-sur-Viroin along the edge of the forest, you get the feeling that you have ended up in the wrong place. There are no rocks in the distance and the path you should follow according to the description leads up the hill. Where is the river valley - this can't be right! However, if you take the trouble to walk the path up the slope, a surprise awaits you at the top of the hill. There, deep in the ground, hidden by the surrounding forest, lies the Carrière Prospèr, flanked on three sides by steep rock walls. The eye-catcher of the area is the southeast wall cut off as if with a knife. A rectangular niche has been carved out in the middle of this wall with some of the most characteristic rift routes found in Belgium on either side. It is perhaps the best place in Belgium to put your crevice climbing skills into practice.
