As far as I know, all fountains in Basel are drinking water fountains. That's not unusual there.

The St. Alban Vorstadt is one of my favorite old town districts in Basel. It is quiet, green, well-kept and offers a wonderful way to get to the banks of the Rhine. If you cycle through the Dalbe (that's what the district is called in Basel German), you can admire many old houses at a leisurely pace, which used to be home to the so-called Daig, i.e. the wealthy people of Basel.

From the edge of the village of Arlesheim you have a beautiful view towards the Ermitage and Birseck Castle. It is open for visits every Wednesday and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. from Easter to October 31st.

Great view of Basel from the riverbank. Just beyond the bridge you can make out the imposing towers of the cathedral.
