Karl Graf von Tattenbach was a captain and company commander of the royal Bavarian 14th Infantry Regiment. It is reported that shortly after the battle he was found leaning upright against a beech tree, saber in hand, and on his outstretched arm. Up until 1914, a 30 cm wide and 25 cm high black sheet metal plaque was attached to a tree, on which was written in bronze letters: He died under this beech kgl. bayer. Rifle captain of the 14th Inf. Regts. Count Karl von Tattenbach of heroic death on July 25, 1866.

During the "Brotherly War", in a violent hand-to-hand battle between Prussian and Bavarian troops in the Lerchenberg Forest on July 25, 1866, the Bavarians were pushed back towards Waldbrunn. 29 dead people found their final resting place here at an old crossroads in two mass graves separated by a central aisle. The memorial cross was erected in 1867 by the Unteraltertheim youth on the initiative of the local pastor at the time. The inscriptions on the oval panels on the two sides of the cross could no longer be read in 1914. According to the memory of old residents, on one side, which is still thought-provoking today, was the inscription: "Arms now rest among brothers." (Text on the information board)
