The "Teufelsbuche" (Devil's Beech) was a striking tree on the Thuringian Rennsteig between Kahlert and Masserberg. According to legend, the devil lurked there for hikers, lulled them to sleep, filled their backpacks with stones, or had himself carried in them. After a young man locked the devil in a sack and beat him, there was peace.
